Diese Erzählung wurde von Max Brod aus dem Nachlass des Autors veröffentlicht und mit einem Titel versehen. Das Motiv dieser Erzählung ist mit dem der Verwandlung zu vergleichen: ein Ding, das zugleich Mensch ist. Kafka verzichtet jedoch bei der Erzählung Die Brücke gänzlich auf eine Erklärung des Doppelcharakters. Verstärkt wird die Paradoxie durch die Wahl der Ich- Erzählung und des Präteritums. Der Schluss dieser Erzählung wirkt besonders absurd, da das erzählende Ich sich selbst überlebt, so dass es seinen eigenen Tod aus der Distanz des epischen Präteritums mitteilen kann.
